You know what, I was listening to "Wisteria" on PodCastle a while back and thinking pretty much the same thing. It's a great story, but through most of it I was wondering what was especially speculative about it. They have quite a few stories like that, actually.

It took me forever to find a home for "Glass Angels" -- too Christian for mainstream markets, too controversial for Christian markets. And right now, I'm having trouble finding a home for my selkie story, since the darn selkie market rejected it. **sighs** But "Glass Angels" finally found a home, so I'm hopeful that the selkie story will eventually find one, too.

I like that cupcake story. I would try a speculative market first. It has that slight "piquancy" of spec fic about it. :-) I've been reading a lot of speculative stories lately in places like Pod Castle and Strange Horizons where the spec element is really vague, and could almost be explained away as a character's imagination, but they seem to be selling. The story "Wisteria" that I think I read at Pod Castle comes to mind -- a story about a woman seeing her dead husband's face in vines.

I think it really is more the 3-day novella, but I guess that doesn't sound as impressive. They don't give any exact word count requirements, but they do mention that the average submission is 90 - 120 double-spaced pages (mine was 105). I have a copy of Day Shift Werewolf, the 2005 winner, and it's only 80 pages. I'm thinking word counts of 25,000 - 40,000 are more what they're expecting. Mine last year was 30,000.
