Always be sure and re-review submission guidelines before you send a story off. You never know what you’ll forget over the course of a day or two, and it will save you tons of embarrassment.
Just a friendly reminder from Captain Obvious.

It’s a good tip–many, many dollars in postage are wasted by writers who send inappropriate stories to a magazine that will barely give them a glance before stuffing one of those form rejection slips in the helpfully provided SASE. I no longer submit to magazines so that’s not much of a concern any more–thanks to this new-fangled technology, I have all the readers I need coming to my blog. To the extent that at the end of March I’ll be posting my novel on my site–3+ years in writing and I know my readers will love it. Who needs publishers and editors (and agents)?

I’ve done that, too. Once, I sent a story off at midnight to meet a deadline, and when they rejected it, the editor mentioned that I had neglected to use standard manuscript format or even to put my name and info on the first page of the story. Man, was I embarassed!

I know, I get so embarrassed when I totally miss something so obvious! Sometimes I get so used to looking at a story or document or guidelines that I miss stuff and don’t even realize it.
